Purple Heart Homes Cofounder and Wounded Homecoming Coauthor to Speak at Kiwanis Meeting Saturday, June 16 - 06/07/2018

WESTON, Conn. John Gallina, cofounder of Purple Heart Homes and coauthor of Wounded Homecoming the Uphill Journey of Wounded Veterans from Battlefield to Homefront will speak to members and guests of the Weston Kiwanis Club on Saturday, June 16 at the Norfield church parish hall at 64 Norfield Road.


It took Dale Beatty and John Gallina, combat wounded Iraq veterans, two years to write their book. The book follows what John and Dale saw and did on the battlefield, and also reveals, through interviews, stories of other veterans that served in other conflicts and how the moral injuries of war followed them home. Kiwanis to Present Minicci Leadership and High School Awards Saturday, June 9 - 06/07/2018

This Saturday, June 9, 2018  at the 8:30 a.m. breakfast meeting, the prgram is presentation of the Bob Minicucci Leadership Award and Recognition of the Weston High School Award recipients.

Penny Pearlman established the Bob Minicucci Leadership Award ($1,000) in 2015 to honor the memory of her past president husband and aims to encourage local Boy Scouts to exhibit leadership abilities through daily school and extra-curricular activities, personal reflection and in the community through their participation in projects, clubs, groups, teams and organizations. Rain last Saturday didn't dampen spirits and the Special Olympics Connecticut southern tennis trials proceeded with a change of venue, thanks to the Weston Racquet Club. We received this lovely note after the event:

Kiwanis Members Elect Leaders - 05/05/2018

Members at the annual meetings of the club learned of and elected the Nominating Committee's slate of leaders for positions with terms beginning October 1. 

In the club, President Roy Marsh is immediate past president-designate, President-elect Dr. Tom Failla is president-designate, and Steve Thomas is president-elect-designate, all one-year terms.  Elected to two-year terms as directors were Past President Rick Amill, Rick Goldenberg, Curt Gunn, Past president Dawn Egan, and Past President Glenn Van Deusen.

Retiring and incoming club officers and directors will be discharged and installed respectively by the Kiwanis New England and Bermuda District Division 20 lieutenant governor...

Kiwanis Wine Tasting Benefit A Success - 05/05/2018

After a day of greening up April 28, Kiwanians relaxed at the wine tasting event. At the club meeting today,  Hal Shupack reported the event needed $18,000 to benefit our support of supplying monthly dinners to Homes with Hope 's Gillespie Center and Hoskins’ Place, single men's and single women’s shelter in Westport. Kiwanis Cleans Up, Beautifies Weston - 04/28/2018

Following the club meeting on Green Up Day, Saturday, April 28, 2018, volunteers organized by event chair Bill McKinney spread out across Weston to beautify our town by planting trees provided through the state by Weston Tree Warden Bill Lomas and picking up roadside trash. Community Service Committee member Steve Thomas tallied the refuse collected and dropped off at the transfer station and reported over 900 pounds of trash removed from our roads. Kiwanis Recognizes Tree Warden's Contributions - 04/28/2018

Weston Tree Warden and former Kiwanian Bill Lomas received the 2018 Millie Best Environmental Award presented on Green Up Day Saturday, April 28, 2018. President-Elect Dr. Tom Failla (right) shared Bill's many accomplishments and presented Bill with his award. Bill's name is added to the list of recipients in town hall. First Selectman and Kiwanian Chris Spauldingread his proclamation of Green Up Day in Weston, established by state statute in 1995. It was initiated by Millie Best and supported by Kiwanian legislators State Senator Judith G. Freedman and Representative John E. Stripp.

Reservoir Run Half Marathon to Benefit Connecticut Food Bank Kids’ BackPack Program - 02/17/2018

Kiwanis members designated The  Connecticut Food Bank Kids’ BackPack Program a beneficiary of the seventh annual 2018 Reservoir Run half marathon Sunday, October 28, 2018  at the breakfast meeting today.

According to the agency's website, hunger and food insecurity affect the health and education of more than 127,000 Connecticut children. The Connecticut Food Bank Kids’ BackPack Program provides children with a backpack of nutritious food to help them learn and grow.
