Kiwanis Playground at Cesar A. Batalla School
Why a Playground?
Play is the primary engine of human growth; it's universal - as much as walking and talking. Play is the way children build ideas, make sense of their experience, and feel safe. But play is disappearing from classrooms. Even though we know play is learning for young kids, it too often doesn't compete well with academic instruction and "rigor." In the case of this school, there are no funding opportunities for a playground. Most of these families live in multifamily apartment complex units or local shelters. It is impossible for these children to access the outdoor play every child needs.
Why Cesar A. Batalla Elementary School?
Cesar A. Batalla School, on Howard Avenue in Bridgeport, Connecticut is a kindergarten through eighth grade neighborhood school and the largest elementary school in the state. It has a unique international flavor and 100% of the students are from families with such little income that they qualify to receive both breakfast and lunch at school. Named after one of the area's most beloved Latino leaders, Cesar A. Batalla, the school aims to keep his dream alive - creating a school that is more than a building, becoming an integral part of the West End community and an exceptional place to learn. This school additionally houses a special classroom for children with autism and a classroom for children with other special.
Our Challenge - Your Opportunity - Funding
